A Sunday League football club have announced the signing of the century – in the form of Brazilian World Cup winner Roberto Carlos.

The defender retired from professional football in 2015 following a glittering career which included World Cup glory and three UEFA Champions League medals from his glittering spell with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

However he will dust off his boots for Shrewsbury and District Sunday League One side Bull In the Barne which won the services of the legend after winning an eBay raffle.

Carlos also represented Italian club Inter Milan and Turkish side Fenerbahce during a 24 year career which is still remembered for his time in the white of Madrid.

Carlos is considered one of the greatest left backs in history and in 1997 ended runner-up in the FIFA World Player of the Year rankings and included in the the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in a 2002 FIFA poll, and in 2004 was named by Pele in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.

And now Carlos will be gracing the Shrewsbury and District Sunday League.

Carlos said: "I’m excited to play for Bull In The Barne in Shrewsbury, paying homage to Birmingham City who I almost signed for in the 90s, which is very close by.

"I’ve heard that the team's been down in a number of games this season, so here’s hoping my coaching is sufficient to assist them up their sport and convey what Bull In The Barne’s followers wish to see.”

Club secretary and striker Matt Brown said it was a dream come true.

"None of us believed it was true at first, but it's just fantastic," he said. "We're all the same age and we grew up watching him. Everyone knows the free kick against France in the World Cup and we all saw it. Being on the same field as him will be amazing.”

There is currently no set date for the February game or details about the opponent.

The raffle and game will be in support of Football Beyond Borders, a charity that was created to change the lives of young people.
