A CHARITY swim will be taking place at the end of this month in memory of Jacqueline Sinnott, wife of Whitchurch mayor, John Sinnott.

The charity swim will be taking place at Hill Valley Gym, Whitchurch on Thursday January 27 and Friday January 28.

Those taking part will swim 21 miles or 1, 700 lengths which is the equivalent of swimming the English Channel.

Mrs Sinnott died on December 2, at the age of 74, was a long serving member and regular at Hill Valley Gym.

"Jacky was an active member of AquaFit at Hill Valley," organiser said Olivia Briggs.

"AquaFit meets four mornings and one evening a week at Hill Valley Leisure Club run by Susie Knight.

"Jacky was a regular attendee at that.

"It's her friends who met four to five times a week who are doing it."

Given Jacky was a regular to Hill Valley Leisure Centre, many see it as a fitting tribute to host the event at the venue.

More than 20 swimmers are expected to take part in the event.

In addition, there has been a fundraising campaign through GoFund Me to raise money for the charity swim.

The organisers have managed to raise a significant £435 so far.

The money raised will be donated to the UK Sepsis Trust.

The decision was made, at her funeral, to donate any money in her name towards sepsis charities.

Sepsis was identified as the cause of her passing away.

"That was the chosen charity at her funeral so we've adopted that," Olivia added.

"I think her diagnosis was sepsis.

"She was taken ill very suddenly and sepsis was the diagnosis.

"It's very personal."

There has been a lot of support for the upcoming fundraising event from Councillors Sinnott himself.

Olivia said: "Her husband's well aware we're doing it and very supportive.

"He's absolutely delighted people are trying to raise more money for her chosen charity."

John and Jacky, both from Wirral, met 57 years ago and married in 1968.

They moved to various parts of the UK and Europe when John was serving in the British Army before eventually moving to Whitchurch where John went on to become a town councillor and mayor.
