A CHARITY chief executive from north Shropshire says he is 'overwhelmed' to have received an OBE for his services to people with muscular disabilities.

Matthew Lanham is chief executive of The Neuro Muscular Centre and was given the award for 'for services to people affected by neuro muscular conditions in the UK'.

Mr Lanham, from Prees, said he was deeply honoured to be receiving the award and thanked all those who helped him.

“I am chuffed, " he said.

"It is amazing to get that.

"When hearing five weeks ago, I was really taken aback. I’m very proud and pleased. It really feels nice to receive this.

“I am overwhelmed that people thought I was deserving of it and completely surprised that they’ve given the time and trouble and thought I was worthy.

"It is quite an emotional thing.

“I am very grateful to the people who’ve have nominated me. It is fantastic.”

Mr Lanham has been chief executive at the Winsford-based charity since 2005. The centre specialises in providing specialist treatment and advice for people with muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular conditions.

Mr Lanham said the majority of those who use their service come from Cheshire, Shropshire, Mid and North Wales and across North West England.

The Neuro Muscular Centre braved the difficulties caused by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 to continue operating and providing services to those who depend on it.

Mr Lanham said: “We kept functioning because a lot of our work is to stop muscle wasting. If we don’t do the exercise the muscle deteriorates. It slows down.”

Although originally from Essex, Mr Lanham has lived in Prees for 30 years with his wife, Anne and his son.

In addition to being chief executive of The Neuro Muscular Centre, has served on Prees Parish Council for the past eight years.

Mr Lanham paid tribute to the support Neuro Muscular Centre have received from the public. Generous public support has enabled the centre to continue operating and providing a service.

He said: “Our supporters have been fantastic, particularly through the pandemic. We have been able to function, due to donations, big and small, from those who’ve stood with us.”
