A LOCAL charity has worked closely with a local pharmacy to bring festive cheer to those who will be spending Christmas in hospital.

Every year, The League of Friends for Whitchurch Hospital purchase a gift for every patient in hospital on Christmas Day. This year they have done this with the support of Ann Coffin and the team at Green End Pharmacy.

Ann said: “I’ve helped for at least 10 years. This year was a bit better than last year with less restrictions.

“This is the first year I’ve donated. Hospitals never asked for anything from me.”

Pauline Elsley, from The League of Friends for Whitchurch Hospital, said: “Ann has always helped us with this yearly event, but this year wanted to donate the gifts that will hopefully bring a little cheer to those who find themselves in hospital at Christmas. We are very grateful to Green End Pharmacy.”

The ongoing covid 19 pandemic has made it difficult for The League of Friends for Whitchurch Hospital to raise funds and members are grateful for any donations they receive. Mrs Elsley described the last two years as “most testing.”

Mrs Elsley added there has been a lot of support from local people. “There has been a lot of community support. Many people do donate instead of sending cards. As a town people support it.”

Feelings of loneliness over the Christmas period add to the sense of importance in ensuring patients receive gifts. Mrs Elsley said: “It has been very difficult with visiting as people have found they can’t be with loved ones due to restrictions. In receiving gifts, people will feel somebody does care.”

Mrs Elsley added: “If anyone is interested in joining the committee or fundraising, they can contact me on paulin.elsley@icloud.com”
