A case of bird flu has been discovered at a site near Wem.

The case, which was discovered on Wednesday, December 15, is the first in North Shropshire of the current outbreak.

A three-kilometre protection zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone have been put around the premises.

A spokesperson for the Animal and Plant Health Agency said: “Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been located at a premises near Wem.

"Please remain vigilant for signs of ill health and ensure measures are in place wild bird contact with domestic birds.”

They added: “All birds on the infected premises will be humanely culled.”

The outbreak is currently being dubbed the 'UK's largest ever' and restrictions have been put in place across the country in a bid to reduce it.

The first known case was recorded just over the Shropshire border in Chirk, north Wales.
