THE aisles of St Mary’s parish church in Ellesmere were packed on Saturday as visitors enjoyed the festive atmosphere of a Christmas craft and food fair.

Several hundred people flocked to the church for the first event of its kind in the historic building.

There were more than 30 stalls spaced out around the church. with cards by local artist Pam Bowen, wine from Rowton Vineyard, run by twins Melissa and Zoe Evans, and a bijou collectibles stall arranged by Catherine Juckes and her friend Julie, in aid of Crisis at Christmas.

Town centre shops, including Moolah and Canvas and Clay, also displayed their wares.

Organiser David Reffell said he was delighted with the magnificent response and while a final figure has not been confirmed, he thinks it was a successful day.

He said: “It was a lovely festive occasion with mulled wine, mince pies, cakes and lunches on offer, and carols ringing out around the church.

"I’d like to thank everyone for their support.

“We reckon that the fair has raised more than £1,500 for the church and also supported local charity groups such as Age UK, North Shropshire and the Ellesmere branch of the Save the Children charity.”
