EXTENSIVE renovation work is being undertaken at Wood Lane Nature Reserve, near Ellesmere, on Monday.

Regarded as “one of the best bird watching sites in Shropshire” by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Wood Lane Nature Reserve will close to the public on December 13 in order to undergo essential maintenance.

The reserve was developed on worked out industrial land owned by construction firm Tudor Griffiths.

Several large lagoons and islands with surrounding wetland make up the reserve, which has recorded more than 180 species of bird since its opening in 1999.

The islands will be the subject of the restoration as they are being re-landscaped, with extensive regeneration being undertaken to enhance the site in preparation for the 2022 breeding season.

Shropshire Wildlife Trust describes the site as “a rare and much needed haven for breeding”.

Wood Lane Nature Reserve frequently carries out work and renovations to accommodate the large numbers of birds nesting within the area.

Water levels are controlled by pumps so optimum amounts of mud and water are available for wading birds.

The islands were created for safe roosting, and hundreds of trees have been planted with box nests installed in them. Mountains of sand were added to provide nesting opportunities for sand martins.
