A LACK of fireworks means there will be no official display in Wem this year.

The annual event was due to take place on Friday, November 5 at Wem Sports and Social Club, but organisers say a lack of fireworks and the costs involved in running the event have forced them to call it off.

A spokesman said they would endeavour to host the display next year.

They said: "It is with regret that trustees of Wem Sports and Social Association have decided to cancel the fireworks and bonfire event held at the Butler Sports Ground this year.

"This is due to several factors including the cost and availability of fireworks.

"We realise this is a much-loved event in Wem’s calendar which raised vital funds to help the association to manage sporting facilities in the town.

"Trustees will endeavour to put on a fireworks and bonfire event next year if circumstances and finances allow."
