FIREFIGHTERS remain at the scene following a large fire at the town's business park overnight.

The incident was reported at around 12.30am, on Wednesday and saw six fire crews from five towns dispatched, as well as an operations and safety officer.

The fire involved a large building on Wem Business Park, with smoke and flames reported to be coming through the roof.

It left many properties without power but that has now returned.

Whitchurch Herald:

Crews used water jets to tackle the blaze, as well as breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera.

They remained at the scene during Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for Wem Fire Station said crews worked hard to tackle the fire, and encouraged residents to close windows.

They said: "Crews worked extremely hard in tough conditions.

"There are road closures currently in place in New Street.

"Advice to local properties to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke plume."

Whitchurch Herald:

Because of the fire, electrical engineers had been forced to cut power to much of the town.

A Shropshire Council spokesman explained the issue.

"Approximately half of the town is now without power," they said this morning.

"This is because Scottish Power are trying to isolate the power to the building but have to dig down in order to get to the source."
