A WEM teenager who lost his leg to cancer will appear on TV alongside Matt Baker this weekend as part of a Children in Need feature.

Alfie Rixon, 14, had his left leg amputated below the knee in 2019 after being diagnosed with cancer earlier that year.

He had to undergo chemotherapy before the amputation could take place, and then had to learn how to walk again.

But earlier this year Alfie walked 10-miles from his home in Wem to Grinshill and back again to raise money for Hope House Hospice, as a way of giving back to the charity which supported him and his family.

This week Alfie returned to Grinshill, this time with Countryfile host Matt Baker, to film the first segment of a feature for Children in Need, which will see Alfie and Matt cycle, swim and run.

Alfie visited the forest with sister Elizabeth, dad Daniel and grandparents Andrew and Lynne, and filmed the cycling segment of the pair’s journey.

Lynne said: "They spent a day filming with Matt in our very own Corbet Wood at Grinshill and spoke about the help they receive from Hope House Hospice during and after Alfie's cancer treatment for this Children in Need special.

"They will be filming with him again soon for another programme later in the month.

"Maybe it will spur more people on to help raise money for Children in Need!"

The episode will be broadcast on BBC One on Sunday, October 3 at 5pm.
