THE Avengers and characters from Beatrix Potter visited Whixall this month for the now-traditional scarecrow competition

Around 50 scarecrows popped up around the village from September 11 to 19, for a competition in aid of Whixall Primary School, Midlands Air Ambulance and the community first responders.

More than 150 people voted for their favourite creations, with categories split between fun and traditional.

Dave Birch, one of the event organisers, said around £2,000 was raised by the competition.

He said: "This year's charity hunt has been a huge success and saw nearly 50 entrants into both the fun and traditional categories.

"Well over 200 map/voting forms were collected from scarecrow HQ in Hollinwood and 160 sent back the slips to vote for their favourite exhibit.

"The event ended with a village fate and evening party all together raising £2,000.

"First in the fun class were the Preston family with 101 Dalmatians, second was Freda Reeves of Church Lane, followed by Lyndsey Reeves also of Church Lane with the amazing Avengers entry.

"Traditional was won by Beatrix Potter by Mr McGregor, second was The Mad Hatter by the Dowley family and third was Patchwork Peg by the Fords.

"Locals are already planning next year's event with an even bigger and better display!"
