We are fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

So it's hardly surprising that Shropshire has attracted hundreds of filmmakers over the years to provide the picture perfect backdrop to their productions.

Of course there are many more than we can list here, but these are just a few of our top ones.

The question is how many did you know about?

1) Time (2021)

Whitchurch Herald: Shrewsbury PrisonShrewsbury Prison

We'll start off with a recent one - Time, starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham graced our TV screens earlier this year.

It follows the tale of Mark Cobden (Bean) who is sent to prison and must learn how to survive and quickly.

But did you know that the three-part series was filmed in HM Prison Shrewsbury?

The former prison, also known as The Dana, was decommissioned in March 2013 but you can still visit.

You can find out more here.

2) Atonement (2007)

Next up we take a trip back a few years to romantic war drama Atonement.

Based on the novel written by Ian McEwan, it tells the heartbreaking story of young writer Briony Tallis who irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses the lover (James McAvoy) of her older sister (Keira Knightley) of a crime he did not commit.

The Tallis household is a stunning sight and feature heavily in the early part of the film.

And luckily for us, the real-life Stokesay Court, is just down the road in Craven Arms.

3) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

It's almost 20 years since this classic tale had a reboot.

And although most of this blockbuster hit was film abroad, you might be surprised to discover that Highley Station on the Severn Valley Railway was used to film some of the train scenes.

And yet again it's a location that is available to visit - and you won't have to go sneaking through any wardrobe doors to get there.

4) Free Rein (2017-2019)

Now something a little more close to home - the Netflix series Free Rein.

Set in the English countryside, the series is based on 15-year-old American Zoe who is visiting for the summer and is befriended by a mysterious horse.

Filming for the show took place in Ellesmere, Whitchurch and Malpas.

British dressage Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin appears in the series.

5) Lost in Austen (2008)

Whitchurch Herald: Weston Park may be a filming location - but it's also famed for V FestWeston Park may be a filming location - but it's also famed for V Fest

Taking a step back in time once again, we have Lost in Austen, a four-part ITV series starring Jemima Rooper as Amanda, a Jane Austen fan who somehow swaps places with the author's fictional heroine Elizabeth Bennet.

Filming for this series took place across the UK, but the stunning Weston Park in Weston-under-Lizard featured in some scenes.

Yet again you can visit this beautiful stately home - which is also famed for hosting the former V Fest event.

6) A Christmas Carol (1984)

Now for one of the big films - the 1984 filming of Charles Dicken's classic tale, A Christmas Carol saw Shrewsbury transformed into Victorian London.

It starred George C. Scott, Frank Finlay and Angela Pleasence and more than 450 people from the town were used as extras during filming.

Apparently Shrewsbury was one of Dicken's favourite places.

You can visit numerous locations that feature in the film or take a tour with Martin Wood, Shrewsbury's town crier and stand in for Edward Woodward on the film, available on Youtube.

7) Absolution (1978)

We take a slightly dark turn now with the thriller Absolution.

Starring Richard Burton and featuring a young Billy Connolly, it follows the story of a rebellious young scholar at a Catholic school.

But did you know that Ellesmere College provided the backdrop for the school scenes?
