A DONATION drop for Afghan refugees is taking a break after being inundated with supplies.

Ellesmere Town Council began accepting donations of clothing at the town hall, in preparation for the arrival of refugees who have fled the country after it was taken over by the Taliban.

The scheme has been so successful that donations are being paused to give the Shropshire Supports Refugees group time to sort through those that have already been received.

Those wanting to donate can do so until Friday, September 10.

Jo Butterworth, council clerk, thanked all those who donated so far.

They said: "A massive thank you to everyone that has been generous enough to make donations for the refugees, we have been overwhelmed here at the town hall.

"I have spoken to Shropshire Supports Refugees and the volume of donations received throughout the county has been terrific, however as a result a pause will be placed on donations received until further notice, allowing them to assess the situation further.

"We should know more in about a week's time."

Jo added: "[Shropshire Supports Refugees] is looking for clothes rails and coat hangers as well as volunteers to sort the donations.
