A WHITCHURCH man will attempt the London Marathon this year to help raise funds for a cause close to his heart.

John Haley, 31, only began running a few years ago and has been steadily improving over the intervening years – and is now planning to tackle the country’s top race in the form of the London Marathon.

At the weekend he undertook a 16-mile race at Oulton Park circuit and proved he was on the right track for the London Marathon, by finishing third.

Mr Haley attempted to join the race last year, but was unsuccessful.

However, he was granted entry for this year’s event, which is scheduled to take place on October 3, having been cancelled amid the Covid epidemic in 2020.

He says he will be running for Maudsley Charity, in memory of friends and family who have lost their lives to mental health.

“Im wanting to raise more awareness for this charity that has dedicated years to improving services and care for those who suffer from mental health illness,” said Mr Haley.

“I’m running in memory of those who have battled and unfortunately lost.”

Mr Haley continued: “My wife lost her sister in 2010 to suicide.

“She was in her first year of studying to become a mental health nurse.

“The more we can support mental health charities the more hope we have in saving lives.”

“It’s okay not to be okay, just don’t give up.”
