WEM Town Council is looking at more ways of going 'green' with the potential installation of electric car chargers.

The town council is currently in consultation with Shropshire Council over the installation of the chargers.

But Shropshire Council's 'one size fits all' approach to installing overnight chargers means the town council is pushing to have a fast version installed to welcome more shoppers with electric vehicles.

Council clerk Penny O'Hagan suggested the council 'put pressure' on their Shropshire counterparts to install the chargers they want.

She added: "The initial idea is Shropshire Council is putting in a grant application to install electric charging points in residential areas with no off-street parking.

"(Such as) properties ins streets like Barnard Street, New Street and the main car park.

"We're in the second round of applications because personally I see no problem with putting an overnight charger in the main car park.

"Mill Street is perfect for overnight parking as is Bowensfield.

"The issues I see is that fast chargers are phenomenally expensive.

"I recommend we look along the lines of other councils that have done it.

"Shropshire Council has gone with one blanket company to do the lot but the real thing we need to be pushing for is fast charging, because that's what people want.

"The issue is that we don't own the main car park so we will have to put pressure on Shropshire Council to install the right one."
