A SPECIAL service was held at Ellesmere parish church on Sunday to commemorate the centenary of the Royal British Legion.
Members of the local branch were joined by civic leaders and representatives of the army cadets, scouts and guides.
It was 100 years ago, in May 1921, that the Legion was founded through the merger of four rival armed forces organisations that had been set up nationally to care for those who had suffered as a result of service during the First World War.
The service was led by the Vicar of Ellesmere, the Rev Pat Hawkin, who was joined by Ellesmere town mayor Councillor Paul Goulbourne and his wife, Mary.
They were also joined by Bob McBride, chairman of the Legion’s Ellesmere branch and branch president Ian Williams, who is also chairman of the county branch.
