ORGANISERS of an event at Ellesmere's Mere that had to be cancelled because of a toxic algae have made a wider call for people to be safe.

Soaring temperatures this week with long hours of sunshine has led to the presence of a blue-green algae which can cause harm to humans and animals swimming close to it.

It led to the cancellation of human mermaid Jeni Hall's trip into the water for the Mermaid Trail on Saturday, and has led to signs being put up by Shropshire Council.

But concerned organisers said: "The appearance of toxic algae blooms prompted Shropshire Council to to post notices around the mere, warning people stay out of the water and keep their dogs away.

"Exposure to the toxic bacteria while swimming or even paddling can lead to skin rashes, eye irritation, nausea, stomach ache and tingling in the fingers and toes.

"It is potentially fatal to pets, livestock and birds."

They added that children had been swimming close to the sign still, and asked for people to remain cautious about entering into the water.

The sign also warns people to not let their dogs drink fromt he water.
