A NUMBER of roads in and around Whitchurch are set to receive a programme of repairs later this year.

Throughout Shropshire, 37 stretches of road totalling 184km in length are to be resurfaced in the coming months as Shropshire Council continues its programme of work to improve the county's roads.

Dates will be confirmed shortly.

In Whitchurch, roads set to be resurfaced include the Whitchurch Bypass between the A41 and Tarporley Road, Mile Bank Road and Newtown.

Meanwhile, the Northwood to Ellesmere Road near Wem, and Burlton crossroads to English Frankton junction in Loppington, are also set to be resurfaced.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said the council were committed to improving roads.

"We're committed to improving our roads and making them safer for all road users. Our annual resurfacing programme is an important part of this," he said.

"It will greatly improve nearly 200km of roads, and help to prevent problems occurring in the future, and means we won't have to spend as much time on smaller repairs.

"I thank people for their patience and understanding while this important work is carried out."

The annual resurfacing programme is put together based on regular inspections and annual surveys of the county's roads, plus reports from residents, councillors, parish councils and community groups.

To achieve value for money, roads that are likely to need costly repairs in the future are prioritised.
