The Red Lion Inn in Ellesmere is a much loved 16th Century Coaching Inn set in the Shropshire Lakelands.

With treasured memories held by many people from Ellesmere and afar this family friendly restaurant pub continues to be as well-liked as ever.

All those years ago, it was a popular stop for travellers and their horses. It is easy to stand back and imagine seeing them enter through the front doors that you have just been through, cross the cobbled road in front of the bar and go straight through to the courtyard and use the stables which you can still see now.

After years of refurbishments and famous landlords/ladies past and present, it is currently run by Lois, Simon, their children Summer and Talon and all their fantastically progressive team.

The Coaching Inn is a very popular eating destination for family occasions and has a huge customer base that support throughout the year.

Landlady and manager Lois said: “We are so grateful to our regular customers for their continued support through these very difficult times.

"We have a brilliant reputation along the canal as a popular stop for food whilst people explore Ellesmere.

"Just a stone’s throw away is “The Mere” which is the largest of nine Meres around here, hence giving us the nickname of “The Mini Lake District” of England.”

They also have a huge pet following.

Dogs visit regularly and enjoy a meal from the “Dog Menu” followed by homemade, pet friendly ice cream. They sometimes bring their well-behaved owners too!

Once seated you can enjoy heartwarming dishes such as braised beef and mash or steak and ale pie. Washed down by one of Thwaite’s finest Ales by the open fire.

Alternatively enjoy delicious pasta dishes or a chicken, bacon and avocado salad bowl, in the Blooming Beer Garden accompanied by a crisp white Pinot or a fruity Gin.

A great attraction is the emphasis on wholesome home cooked food.

Cooks Jenni Wigglesworth, Kimberley Edwards and Leigh-Anne Walsh source local, fresh produce daily from places such as Home Farm in Overton and Neil France Fresh Fruit & Veg from Wem. It is then served to you by the extremely warm, professional front of house staff.

Nothing is too big or small for them to tackle and your enjoyment is their number 1 priority.

The inn offers a range of rooms from shared shower rooms for the budget travellers to huge family rooms with bunk beds and private wet rooms.

Visitors from all over the world have enjoyed their stay and there has certainly been a boom in staycations this year with families visiting who have never been before.

So all in all the Red Lion provides the full package expected from a traditional British Coaching Inn.

From quenching your thirst after a leisurely walk, to resting your weary head after a beautiful day spent visiting the gem that is Ellesmere.
