AN ENTRIE year group at a Wrexham secondary school have been told to isolate due to a coronavirus case being confirmed.

Year 10 pupils at the Maelor School, in Penley, have been told they must stay at home now after a fellow student has tested positive for the virus.

In a social media post from the official school account, Headteacher Simon Ellis said: “I have been informed of a positive PCR COVID test result for a Year 10 pupil who was last in school on Tuesday, July 6. They also get bus V.

“This now means that all Year 10 - and any pupils who were on BUS V on Tuesday, July 6 - will need to isolate for 10 days from the last day that the pupil was in school.”

Pupils will need to isolate until Saturday, July 17, the head confirms.

It comes after the school earlier announced it would be sending home its entire Year 8 cohort.

Mr Elis adds: “It’s really disappointing that this will mean that we will not now see those pupils until after the summer break.

“I can tell how frustrating the rules are becoming and it gives me no joy whatsoever to send healthy pupils home to isolate, to see so many of them miss important sports or club events but I must follow the current rules set down by the Welsh Government.

“Our online work for Year 10 will commence tomorrow alongside the work we are already doing for Year 8.”

Mr Ellis previously posted a message to the school community urging pupils not to be sent into school when feeling unwell and to get tested for the virus that is now on the rise again across the region.

The Leader has previously reported that thousands of pupils are in isolation across the county borough.
