A WHITCHURCH high street bank is set to close this Friday, July 9.

Barclays, in High Street will close after bosses said a decrease in customers was the primary reason.

Following the closure, the next nearest branch for customers will be in Nantwich.

The bank has also confirmed that it does not intend to make anyone redundant as a result of the closure and staff at the branch have been offered alternative roles within the business.

Joseph Appleton, Barclays market director for the region, said people using alternative ways to manage their money meant the branch had seen a decline in customers.

"The decision to close a branch is never an easy one," said Mr Appleton.

"However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking.

"As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

"This is reflected at the Whitchurch branch where there has been a seven per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020.

In addition, over four fifths (82 per cent) of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

"We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required."
