A WHITCHURCH stand-up comedian is hoping to p-p-p-pick up the prizes at a comedy competition with his character, the 'Punguin'.

Donal Mackerel is no stranger to the mic, having performed as a comic since 2016 and since then he has won various awards, including Cheshire Cat Comedian of the Year 2018 and Midlands Comedy Awards Best Alternative Act 2019.

Donald is once again gunning for the top spot with his latest act, the Punguin, into the final eight of the Chester New Comedian of the Year.

Speaking about the competition, Donald said he was delighted to be in the running.

"I'm delighted to have gotten there after being part of the initial 200-odd applicants," said the 40-year-old.

"I've already bagged a few big awards but winning one close to home would be lovely for me and I'm just glad that comedy is showing signs of recovery, like all sectors damaged by the pandemic.

"Also, I get to dress up as a penguin in tights and shout at people, so win/win."

Meanwhile, Donald will also be appearing in Whitchurch next month for his latest comedy night at the White Bear in High Street.

Andrew Lawrence will be headlining the show, having previously appeared on Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and Dave's One Night Stand.

Joining Donald and Andrew will be Liam Pickford and Jenny Bside.

Chester New Comedian of the Year will take place in Chester Market on Thursday, July 15 from 8pm until 10pm.
