The Black Lion Hotel based on Scotland Street in Ellesmere dates back to the Tudor era.

Many of the features of the original building survive to this day.

The front bar being the oldest part of the building is beamed with an interesting bar which locals believe came from Chirk Castle.

Originally there was only the ground and the first floor but as the hotel rooms were restored an extra floor was added at some point in the pub's history.

The expansion of the building did not finish there with space at the rear of the property quickly built on, adding an extra bar, that is currently the sports bar and a large function room.

Even today, many of the old features remain and the building is very popular with tourists visiting the area.

Today the hotel boasts a lovely restaurant that serves typically British food that is hand cooked on the premises.

With the sports bar at the rear, showing all live sports, this is kept separate from those who would like to have a quiet drink at the front of the property where there is now a Tudor bar.

The hotel has won many awards on several internet sites and is hotel of the year with Central England’s Prestige Awards.

The Lion also offers live entertainment from singers and bands to even a drag queen.

Where possible, this is shown in a large beer garden or, if the weather is not favourable, in the function room.
