A campaign has been launched to raise £40,000 to buy rare Bronze Age objects that were discovered hidden underground along the Welsh border with Shropshire.

Shropshire Council’s Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery is seeking to purchase the archaeologically significant collection so that they can be kept, conserved and displayed in the county for all to see.

The spectacular hoard of Bronze Age treasure was found in the north Shropshire Marches by an anonymous metal detectorist in May 2018, alongside what could be the most significant piece of Bronze Age metalwork ever discovered in Britain – the Shropshire Sun Pendant.

The Sun Pendant will be on permanent display at the British Museum in London; however, it will go on display for the first time ever at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery from September 10 to December 12.

Sasha Morris-Bhatia, from Shropshire Museums and Art Gallery, said: "We need your help to raise enough money to acquire the other amazing objects from the findspot. These Shropshire finds will help us understand so much more of this period in history and the transition between the Bronze and Iron Ages.

"I'm sure, like us, you will think it is really important to keep these in Shropshire. Having them on permanent display at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery will be a real boost for the county and it will give visitors a unique opportunity to learn about this fascinating time in British history.

"Please help us to raise enough money to keep these objects in the county where they belong."

Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for communities, place, tourism and transport, added: “It will be wonderful to have the Sun Pendant back here in Shropshire where it belongs, and it would be great to be able to display the other items alongside it if we can for local people and visitors to enjoy."
