WEM'S returning mayor, Councillor Peter Broomhall, says 'bringing life' back to the town is his top priority.

Cllr Broomhall was appointed Mayor of Wem at the town council's most recent meeting, taking over from Cllr Phil Glover.

It is the second time Cllr Broomhall will wear the mayoral chain, having also served as mayor between 2012 and 2013.

Cllr Broomhall says he is looking forward to working towards improving Wem.

"It was a great honour for me to be elected Mayor of Wem for a second time," said Cllr Broomhall.

"I look forward to working with the town councillors for the good of Wem.

"We will be trying to help the economy to improve after Covid-19.

"Wem has had a number of new shops open recently and good luck to them – hoping the empty shops can be brought back into life for a vibrant high street.

"The Sports and Social Club had to be demolished after a survey found the building unsafe, the council will now have to decide what to do next with the site.

"The White Horse Pub will be another project high on my list to improve the entrance to Wem from Mill Street.

"For my year as mayor my charity will be Alzheimer's Society.

"I would like to congratulate Geoff Soul becoming deputy mayor and look forward to working with him."
