CYCLO-cross star Isaac Vickery has proven practice makes perfect with another win over the weekend.

The latest event saw Wem-native Isaac travel to Top Barn in Worcester.

Despite the off-road nature of cyclo-cross, riding in spring is nearly unheard of, making the conditions more like a road race.

The Top Barn course though is known for its exposure to the elements and although Sunday morning was dry there was still a strong wind.

To win this round, Isaac had to navigate a course which meandered around a lake and utilised a steep banking on two sides of the lake to create several switch backs and cambers.

With a 10am start the morning dew had not quite cleared and the grass remained greasy, which caught out several riders who found themselves on the floor.

But Isaac has been practicing his starts lately, which paid dividends in the race.

Isaac's dad Richard explained.

He said: "Isaac has been working on his starts at home on the drive.

"He sets his back wheel against the garage door, and track stands as I count him down before he fires away."

The practice paid off and an electric start saw him quickly establish a lead which grew lap on lap.

"Isaac is looking forward to moving up an age group in September where he will again race boys a year older than him and present a greater challenge," added Richard.

"I think he is ready for it."
