THE precious contents of a substantial and historic country house near Oswestry are due to be offered for auction next month at Whitchurch's Trevanion Auctioneers and Valuers.

Antiques, fine art, furnishings, silver and works of art from Ruyton Hall, in Ruyton XI Towns, will be sold on Wednesday, May 19y at the auctioneers newly-refurbished salerooms in Station Road.

Christina Trevanion, Trevanion Auctioneers managing partner and founder, says that the Grade II-listed Hall, dating back to the 16th century, was filled with exciting finds and undiscovered treasures.

She said: "We are delighted to be selling the contents of Ruyton Hall, which is a beautiful home full of elegant antiques and artwork that have been carefully amassed and cared for across the years.

"The Ruyton Hall collection utterly captures the quintessentially eclectic ‘English country house style’ which is not only incredibly popular here in the UK, but across the world.

"From a spectacular Edo period (1603-1868) Japanese cabinet valued at £5-8,000 to an early 20th century Louis Vuitton trunk discovered in the cellars and expected to make £2-3,000, the house was awash with pieces of exceptional quality and huge appeal in today’s buoyant auction market."

Other highlights from Ruyton Hall in the auction include a carefully curated collection of fine art.

Ashley Jones, Trevanion’s head of country house and significant collections department added: "The paintings from Ruyton are of particular note, and have watercolours spanning ‘The Golden Age of Watercolours 1750-1850’, specialist maritime works by the esteemed 18th century marine artist Peter Monamy, along with a fine 17th century portrait by William Wissing of The Duchess of Portsmouth and a fascinating Daniel Mytens portrait of doomed monarch Charles I.

"The collection read like a who’s-who of great British artists."

Furniture from the hall is up for sale, including a magnificent 18th century mahogany four pillar dining table, extending to nearly four and a half metres long estimated at £5,000-£8,000 and a stunning arts and crafts linen press designed by Ambrose Heal estimated at £3,000-£5,000.

"These items come from a beautiful house awash with provenance and history which has been a much-loved family home over the decades," said Christina.

"The auction offers a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful collection of treasured country house pieces, from silver discovered in the cellar, to oils in the attics, there is truly something for everyone."
