SHROPSHIRE-native Hazel Ruscoe has given her unique insight into how countries end up bidding for major international sporting events on Radio 5 Live.

Hazel, who is from Burlton near Wem, was asked to contribute to the Colin Murray hosted show because of her work on England's ultimately doomed campaign to host the 2006 World Cup.

As part of the process, Hazel produced the 1,000-page formal bid document that was submitted to FIFA for scrutiny.

The 2006 hosting was eventually awarded to Germany, with Italy winning the event.

Hazel was also a press officer for the English FA during Euro 96, which England hosted.

Following the bid, Hazel became The Football Association's head of marketing communications and she later took up a similar role at Tottenham Hotspur.

Joining Hazel on the programme were former Chelsea, Everton and Tranmere star and Scotland international Pat Nevin, football economist Stefan Szymanski and Qatar-based journalist David Harding.
