WEM will soon become a top destination for ducks with the installation of a duck platform.

Every year the pond in the recreation area near Guttery Close/Windmill Meadow is frequented by mallards.

The birds try to nest in the area surrounding the pond but the ducklings often fall the victim of cats from the surrounding houses.

A Wem resident has now appealed to Wem Town Council for permission to construct a floating platform, to ensure the safety of any nesting ducks.

At the town council's virtual meeting, held on Thursday, March 25, councillors discussed the proposal.

Councillor Edward Towers supported the proposal, saying the platform would also add to the look of the pond.

"I would support this, anything to make that place more attractive," said Cllr Towers.

"We have cut back the bushes and it is more observable to the people around it."

Cllr Connie Granger also supported the proposal, but was worried about the upkeep of the platform.

"I love it and I do support it," she said.

"My only concern is who would look after and maintain it."

Council clerk Penny O'Hagan suggested some conditions to allow installation of the platform.

"There needs to be adequate protection of trees before rope is tied to them," said Ms O'Hagan.

"The town council does not accept any liability for damage during construction.

"The duck house must be removed after ducklings have fledged and storage would be responsibility of the people."

Councillors agreed to these conditions and permission was granted on a one-year trial to instal the duck platform.
