A WEM-teenager who lost his leg to an aggressive from of cancer is battling back to raise money for a specialist children's charity.

Alfie Rixon, 14, will walk 10 miles from his home in Wem to Grinshill and back again on March 28 to raise money for Hope House Hospice, a charity dedicated to assisting young people with life-threatening conditions.

In 2019 Alfie had his left leg amputated below the knee after being diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year, with Alfie also having to through chemotherapy before the amputation could take place.

After undergoing the amputation, Alfie underwent further rounds of chemotherapy, in total spending 18 months battling the cancer.

Since 'ringing the bell' to mark the end of his cancer treatment at Telford Oncology Ward and Birmingham Hospital, Alfie has had to re-learn how to walk and ride a bicycle.

Throughout the process Alfie and his family were supported by Hope House and the teenager has now made it his mission to give back to the charity that provided so much support.

Alfie will be joined on his walk by dad Daniel, younger sister Elizabeth and his grandma Lynne Jones.

Lynne says Alfie's mission is 'remarkable' considering 10 miles will be his longest walk since his amputation.

"This will be the longest walk he's ever done on his prosthetic leg," said Lynne. "Hope House has supported him and his family through his cancer and treatment so Alfie wanted to give something back.

"Alfie and Elizabeth go to Thomas Adams School Wem, although Alfie has not only missed school because of lockdown but he missed 18 months due to his treatment and being so ill.

"He's done remarkably well, with Covid coming when it did, to re-learn how to walk and to get back to normal – he just wants to be like every other lad.

"Hope House has supported the family throughout, obviously his sister has been impacted too because her brother has been so ill and the charity has struggled so much lately because of Covid.

"Obviously he would really like it if he could get more sponsors to raise as much as possible for Hope House, but he has raised over £700 so far."
