A TOWN council is continuing to support a national campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence against women.

The Leader previously reported that Connah’s Quay town council pledged to support the White Ribbon UK Campaign which aims to end domestic violence against women.

At their monthly meeting the council was given an update and councillors were asked to adopt the action plan.

White Ribbon UK was founded in 2005 and is part of a global movement aiming to end male violence against women by challenging male attitudes and behaviours.

Back in 2029, Cllr Nathan Jones, who is also a White Ribbon Ambassador, put forward the motion at the monthly meeting as to why they the council should become the first in the country to join the campaign.

Concerns had previously been raised that the campaign did not target male victims, only females but at the March meeting, Cllr Nathan Jones said the council could not ‘dictate what stance’ external organisations take.

He went on to say that violence against men is ‘completely abhorrent’ and should ‘not be accepted’, and urged the council to accept the action plan and also look into a wider policy so the council could support all victims of domestic abuse.

Cllr Ian Dunbar said members have asked in the past for the inclusion of men but said they could not change the format to ‘satisfy themselves’, instead they would take ‘another step’.

Cllr Ryan O’Gorman said he fully supports the proposal and the White Ribbon campaign which is a ‘great organisation’ and said moving forward the council could invite guest speakers and ‘incorporate it into something else’.

The town council voted in favour of the action plan, which included members making the pledge to never ‘commit, excuse or remain silent’ on domestic violence against women and girls.
