GREEN-fingered residents of Whitchurch may soon have extra space to potter about in after funding was approved for a new allotment site.

There are currently just 12 allotments available for Whitchurch residents, at the site adjacent to the Queensway Playing Fields.

In November last year, Whitchurch Town Council hoped to purchase more land to be converted into allotments using receipts from the sale of land off Edward German Drive.

It has now agreed to allocate some funding towards a new allotment site.

A spokesman for Whitchurch Allotment and Community Orchard Association urged potential new allotment owners to get in touch to book a plot.

"Whitchurch Town Council have agreed to allocate some funding towards a much-needed new allotment site," they said.

"We have tried not to advertise the list too much over the years as we haven't had more than 12 plots to offer the town.

"The list has been over 100 at some points meaning that people were waiting many years to be offered a plot, but it currently stands at 25.

"We now need to assess the need to put a case for buying a large enough piece of land for the foreseeable future.

"Please get in touch if you wish to be added to the list, bearing in mind that there are no plots available this year at the current time."
