SHROPSHIRE Council has named one of their gritting fleet after NHS fundraiser, the late Captain Sir Tom Moore.

The council held a competition last year to rename their fleet of gritters, with entrants invited to put forward names before selecting from a short-list.

Sir Moore died early in February and in light of his achievements in raising more than £30 million, Shropshire Council have named one of their gritters after him.

The gritter will be based in Whittington and a spokesman for Shropshire Council said it will help treat roads in the north-west of the county.

"We’re very pleased to introduce you to Captain Tom, one of our newly-named gritters," said a spokesman.

"The name was chosen by the people of Shropshire late last year in tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore.

"'Captain Tom' is based at our Whittington depot, and will help treat roads in north-west Shropshire."
