BIG-HEARTED Whitchurch residents have come to the rescue of residents who will be on their own this Christmas after delivering presents to isolated people.

Dozens of gifts have been handed over to those who may be alone during the festive season.

The idea was the brainchild of Fiona Wilson, a contributor at Helping Hands Whitchurch, who throughout 2020 have run several schemes and campaigns to provide assistance to those who need it most.

She had the idea for the Christmas gifts project and in November encouraged as many people as possible to donate items, which would then be sent to people who had been nominated by others.

Speaking about the idea, Fiona said donating a gift to those in need would show that people cared during a year which has seen isolation soar.

“This year has seen more loneliness and isolation than ever before,” she said. “Many people are isolated due to circumstances beyond their control – they may not get any visitors this year – and a small gift at Christmas would show them that we do care.”

After putting out the call, more than 50 gifts were donated.

Fiona added that these gifts had been donated to the Bradbury Centre, to be distributed to those who were nominated.

“There were 55 gifts delivered today to the Bradbury Centre for housebound patients and local residents.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the amazing community of Whitchurch for their kindness in supporting – what was just a little idea of mine and which has snowballed – you are amazing.

“It was a team effort by many.”

Meanwhile Marjorie Ackerley, one of the recipients of the scheme, thanked those involved for their ‘generosity and kindness’.

She said: “Due to present circumstances many people this year are apart from family and friends.

“I was delighted to receive a present delivered to me from the people of Whitchurch and thank them for their kindness and generosity.”

Marjorie added: “Thank you to all who donated, delivered and nominated and also for showing the true spirit of Christmas.

“I wish you all a happy and blessed Christmas and an improved 2021.”
