ELLESMERE Cricket Club is one step closer to securing a new lawn mower following a donation from the Freemasons.

Earlier this year the club launched a fundraiser to purchase a new mower after Covid-19 stopped traditional ways of raising funds.

Club chairman, James Harrison, launched the fundraiser following the 'devastating' effect on the club's ability to generate funds.

"Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic is having a devastating effect on the club's ability to raise funds in the way it is accustomed, with limited club cricket being played, and our clubhouse closed, we are unable to generate sufficient income," said James.

"Several additional routes, such as local grants are ongoing but do not come close the amount required to ensure the club survives and replace the equipment that has been damaged during the local floods

"New and innovative ways to generate funds for the club need to be sought, not only to secure its financial future but to develop cricket, improve facilities going forward and the survival of the game at club level.

"As a solely volunteer run non-profit making organisation, all funds raised are invested back into the club and the local community.

"Without a mower the club can't operate and Rob our heads groundsman can’t have enjoyable days like this doing what he enjoys best."

Thanks to a recent donation from the Brownlow Lodge of Freemasons, the cricket club is now just £1,000 away from their £10,000 target.

Ian Kelly, worshipful master of The Brownlow Lodge of Freemasons, presented the cheque for £250.

He said: "Freemasons are very much part of the local community in Ellesmere and we are delighted to be able to assist the Ellesmere Cricket Club in their crowd-funding appeal to raise £10,000 for a new mower.

"We hope it brings them every success in the coming seasons."

Meanwhile James added: "Another amazing gesture, thank to everyone who has supported and spread the word about out crowdfunded Mower Appeal."
