THE reverend of St Oswald's church in Malpas has announced he will be retiring next year.

Canon Ian Davenport, 65, will retire on April 30, 2021 after a decade in the job.

Announcing his retirement, Rev Davenport said the decision to step down would offer a 'fresh vision' for the church.

"Earlier this year I wrote to the Acting Bishop of Chester to let him know that 2020 would be my last year in full time ministry," said Rev Davenport. "I will be 66 later this month.

"I was ordained in 1987 and it was 10 years ago in October that I came to Malpas and Threapwood and nine years ago that Holy Trinity joined us and we became a United Benefice.

"I want to let you know that I will be retiring on April 30, 2021 and so I am giving you four months' notice of that.

"The Bishop of Chester and the Archdeacon of Chester are aware that this statement is being made.

"The decision was not taken lightly and after much prayer.

"It takes into account my need to have more time for myself and to step down from leadership responsibilities but also the clear need for new leadership in these parishes that a fresh vision and sense of direction in church family life and mission in the wider community may happen.

"I ask for your prayers today and I will pray for you all and especially the wardens and PCC as the process toward the vacancy and the appointment of my successor begins.

"I own a property in Oxton, Birkenhead and will be living there.

"I envisage my last services spread over two weekends, April 18 and 25 and until then it is business as usual.

"I remain a chaplain to HM The Queen till I am 70.

"Thank you."
