WRENBURY Primary School is celebrating after being announced winners of the Community Award at this year's national Business Education Awards ceremony.

Recognition was given for the school's involvement in a Wrenbury community project – 'Immunisation and why we have it' – which itself had earlier received an NHS Silver Self Care Award.

In partnership with Wrenbury Medical Practice and Wrenbury Nursing Home, the school's Year 4 children looked at the history and science around immunisation and vaccines and spent time learning about the residents' experiences of life pre-vaccination before promoting an awareness about immunisation in their school and community as 'Vaccine Heroes'.

Bessa Cador, headteacher at Wrenbury Primary School, reiterated what was said when the school won the NHS silver self care award.

She said: “Understanding why immunisation matters; hearing and reading first-hand accounts from the residents and then letting the children take the lead in school on this serious health issue not only raised awareness but also highlighted the importance of vaccinations in a more meaningful way for the rest of the pupils and our school community.

"The school and all involved with the original project are immensely proud to have been recognised for the work we have done collaboratively within the Wrenbury community.

"The award is even more pertinent as we are on the cusp of a vaccine roll-out that will hopefully help us all out of this current pandemic and give everyone the little bit of hope we all need after the very challenging and often isolating year we have endured."

Bessa adds that the school are very much looking forward to working on further community projects in the new year.
