We need the support of local people – that’s the message from Whitchurch’s high street as the town prepares for a Christmas shopping period like no other.

The coronavirus has meant it has been a stop-start year for local retailers – as well as those in the hospitality sector, who have had a torrid 2020 – and now they are hoping that a strong Christmas will help them to end the year on a much-needed high note.

The Shropshire County Councillor for Whitchurch North, Peggy Mullock, said: “Having worked in retail in this town for 28 years, I know what a difference it makes if people get out support our businesses.

“Our town needs people to come to shop – we have to keep the ones we have open.

“The shops have done everything they can over the course of this year for the people in town, whether it’s social distancing measures or setting up click and collect.

“Now it’s time for us to stand up and support them in the build-up to Christmas.

“If there’s something that you can buy in Whitchurch that you would normally buy elsewhere, then buy it in Whitchurch.

“Give those shops your help and custom.”

Whitchurch Chamber of Commerce says business owners should work together and with customers and landlords to capitalise on the situation the country has found itself in.

Hilary Seward from the Chamber, says a positive outlook and looking at changes to the way they operate will see businesses through.

“We’re a small little independent hight street in Whitchurch,” said Hilary.

“When I arrived in Whitchurch about eight years ago there were no big retailers and to be fair it hasn’t changed a great deal.

“There are some young people having a go and its actually a really good opportunity to have a go but you have to do something a bit different.

“Businesses need to be positive, optimistic and work together.

“The key things for the town’s businesses is to have reasonable, approachable and supportive landlords, teamwork from the businesses and a good website.”

Meanwhile the Mayor of Whitchurch, Councillor Bev Duffy has commended the strength of the town’s businesses.

“Businesses in the town have been hard hit, but it is great to see the innovation and resolve of our business owners who have developed new way to stay afloat,” said Cllr Duffy.

“We must do everything we can in the run up to Christmas and beyond to support our local businesses which are the lifeblood and vitality of our town.

“Even though there has been no big switch on this year, the town’s Christmas lights are now on for you to enjoy while you shop.”
