WHITCHURCH Alport have confirmed that the resignation of chairman Tony Rogers has been accepted with immediate effect.

Mr Rogers tendered his resignation on September 21 and the club ratified it at the last monthly committee meeting on Thursday night, where he outlined his reasons for doing so.

He posted a farewell statement on a club supporters Facebook page, thanking them for their 'friendship and support' while the Reds confirmed the news on Saturday morning.

A statement said: "It's with great sadness that we have reluctantly accepted Tony's resignation as club chairman.

"We would like to put it on record that we are very grateful for all the hard work that Tony has put into the club during his time as chairman and no doubt we will continue to see him around Yockings Park on match days."

In his farewell statement, Mr Rogers said: "Sadly, I'm writing to inform you that on Monday, September 21, I tendered my resignation from the chair position at WAFC.

"As I'd not subsequently heard anything from the club since that date, I attended last night's, (Thursday, October 8), monthly committee meeting, where I gave my reasons and my resignation was accepted, with immediate effect.

"It's not a decision I made in haste, or lightly. I won't detail everything here but, suffice to say, my position had become unworkable. Nonetheless, I do feel great sadness that it came to this.

"I'd like to thank you all, most importantly, for your friendship, and also your support for me during my relatively short time in the chair.

"I'm proud of what we achieved together in that short time, just a shame it's not continuing. I'm sure our friendships will last onwards.

"Finally, I wish yourselves, and the club, all the very best."
