ELLESMERE Town Council will continue to press Shropshire Council regarding parking congestion on the town's roads following resident complaints.

The issues concern Cambria Avenue and Brownlow Road, both of which are close to schools and both of which can be used as a 'rat run' to avoid Ellesmere's main road and traffic lights.

Last month a meeting was held with residents to discuss the issues, with Mayor of Ellesmere, Councillor Paul Goulbourne bringing the issue to full council, held virtually on Monday, October 5.

At the meeting a number of councillors expressed issues they had with the road, including the lack of double yellow lines, occasional speeding and Shropshire Council's inaction over the issue.

Cllr Geoff Elner was concerned that by failing to act, the council were letting down the people of Ellesmere.

"For a number of years now I have lost count of the number of times I have stood [on the road] with Shropshire council," he said. "I do think we've been aware of this for so long and we've let people down."

Cllr Graham Hutchinson agreed that something needed to be done regarding the roads.

"Something needs to be done even if it's just a reminder to slow down," he said.

Meanwhile Cllr Ryan Hartley took aim at Shropshire Council, saying the town council's concerns had been repeatedly ignored.

"The main problem is that people are allowed to park up to about 10 yards of the junction," said Cllr Hartley. "Speed is not a problem but parking must be pushed back.

"We've spoken to Shropshire councillors and even they've done nothing about it.

"It is a safety problem and Shropshire council say we should get in touch with them if there's a safety problem but they just ignore it.

"Shropshire councillors in charge of Highways are useless."

Following this discussion it was proposed that the council write a letter to Shropshire Council explaining that the road is a safety issue.
