Meeting cancelled

Wem Civic Society’s general meeting on September 15 is cancelled and the talk will instead take place next year.

The talk was to cover the stories of the men listed on Wem’s war memorial.

The society was intending to produce a booklet in parallel with this talk although this is rapidly turning into a book.

Research is also continuing into names that are on the Oddfellows’ Roll of Honour and other that have been omitted from both lists.

The society say any additional information will be gratefully received.

They also hope to go ahead with the meeting on October 20 with Toby Neal talking about the airfields of Northern Shropshire.

Members will be taking part in the Wem Harvest Market on Saturday, September 26 at the Town Hall, Youth Club, and Jubilee Square.

Organisation has involved a lot of jumping through Covid-19 hoops so there will be no raffle – it could not be made Covid-proof but there will be a collection for Wem Youth Club.

The chapel at the Whitchurch Road Cemetery is also under discussion with members debating how best to support the volunteers and their important conservation work on the unique woven rush panels.
