STUDENTS, staff and parents at Bishop Heber High School in Malpas are celebrating both GCSE and A-level results.

With Covid-19 interrupting exams, this year both results were calculated via teacher review, following a government u-turn on using an algorithm.

The algorithm meant many students received 'unfair' results and Bishop Heber High School elected to delay the announcement of their results until the new results were released.

At A-level, Mollie Carnelley achieved an outstanding four Grade A* and is going to study mathematics at Durham University, along with Lauren McCarthy's equally impressive four Grade A* allowing her to secure a place studying medicine at the University of Nottingham.

At GCSE Matilda Walker achieved an amazing feat of, 10 Grade 9's in addition to an A* in A-level mathematics.

Hot on her heels were Katie Sweetnam who also achieved 10 Grade 9's with Jude Lipson following up with nine Grade 9's.

In addition to this, 28 other students achieved the top grades in at least eight subjects.

Head of Year 11, Paul Balmer said students had been rewarded for their hard work.

"It has been a difficult few months for Year 11 students in terms of their GCSE exams but I feel students have been rewarded for their hard work," he said.

"I am glad to see so many students moving on to the next step in their life whether it be employment, college or returning to the sixth form.

"I wish them all well for the future."

Meanwhile headteacher, David Curry said: "Overall, we are extremely proud that students from across the ability range have achieved great results which are a credit to them and demonstrate excellent progress which is a result of the culture of hard work, dedication and commitment that they have developed during their five or seven years at Heber.

"These qualities are also apparent in their response to the current situation and we would like to thank them for their maturity in the way that they have coped with difficult circumstances.

"We are now very much looking forward to welcoming most of Year 11 back to our sixth form in September and wish our Year 13 students the very best for their future."
