The headteacher of Thomas Adams in Wem is ‘delighted’ after students achieved more than 170 Grades 8 and 9 in this year's GCSE results.

The results come after the government made changes to how grades would be calculated, with an algorithm being dropped in favour of teacher assessment.

Top performer at the school, Billy Redmond, believe the results were a fair reflection of his efforts.

"I pretty much did as expected," said Billy, who received four 9s, three 8s and a 7.

"They were saying a lot would see their results changed but only one has been upgraded and two downgraded.

"I think it's quite fair, it mirrors my work."

Erin Robinson, who achieved four 9s, said she did better than expected.

"I was worried but in the end it's been alright," she said. "I did better than expected.

And Sean Wentel also said he was pleased with his results.

Achieving two 9s and seven 8s, Sean said: "I'm really pleased, I got a 9 in French and music and the rest are 8s.

"I'm going to sixth form to study maths, physics and chemistry.

"I'm pretty driven my medicine, so something in that field is the top of my list."

Delighted headteacher, Mark Cooper, praised the efforts of staff and students on the results.

"Everyone has worked incredibly hard this year," he said.

"Yet again, we are extremely pleased with the high percentage of our students who gained the English baccalaureate, demonstrating strong performance across a suite of academic subjects, including English, maths, science and languages.

"Overall, our Year 11s achieved 171 Grade 9s and 8s with a number of outstanding individual successes.

"Our top six performers achieved 49 Grade 8 and 9s in all of their examinations".

"In addition, a significant number of students have made well above national expected levels of progress throughout their time at Thomas Adams School and we are also immensely proud of those students who have overcome personal difficulties in order to achieve their best".

"I would like to put on record my thanks to all students, staff and parents, for what was an exemplary team effort during the recent difficult and challenging times.

"Many of these Thomas Adams students are now joining others from across north Shropshire, and from further afield, in moving on to take A-levels at The Thomas Adams Sixth Form.

"I am sure we will enjoy further success with them in two years' time."
