THERE will be no Christmas Festival in Wem this year but plans are being put in place to make sure December is as festive as ever.

The annual Christmas Festival often brings hundreds of people into the streets of Wem to see the lights switched on, with TV comedian Greg Davies doing the honours last year.

But with Covid-19 still a real threat, the thought of having the street filled with people is believed to be unfeasible.

Liz Broomhall from the Wem Christmas Lights Committee said despite the typical festival not going ahead, the town will still have a Christmas feel.

"With the very unsettled circumstances of 2020, Wem Christmas Lights Committee have decided not to go ahead with a festival this year," said Liz.

"We will put up trees and lights in High Street as usual plus the large tree on the church green and the Tree of Light in Jubilee Square.

"These will go up during November in case shop owners would like to have a late night shopping event.

"Also we will try to put additional lights throughout the town."

Liz also hope the festival will return for 2021 and says the committee is looking for new members.

"Hopefully we will be back to normal next year," she added.

"In the meantime if anyone has any suggestions for brightening up Wem or if anyone would like to join us on our small committee, please be in touch."
