NORTH Wales had the highest number of drink drivers across all regions in England and Wales last year, a study has found.

Adrian Flux, a car insurance brokers, analysed the most recent motoring offences data from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to find out the most interesting trends in motoring offences and violations over the past ten years.

Across all regions in England and Wales, the report reveals that North Wales had the highest number of drink drivers per 1,000 people in 2019.

In fact, with a rate of 0.92 drink drivers per 1,000 people, North Wales was more than 30 per cent above the average rate for England and Wales as a whole (0.7 per 1,000).

North Wales also saw a year on year increase of drink driver offences, at 876 offences in 2018 and 799 offences in 2019.

The report also found that male drivers were responsible for more than 7 in 10 drink-related driving offences in North Wales in 2019, accounting for 74 per cent of all drink-related driving offences

Almost 97 per cent of offenders were found guilty, with 78 per cent of this figure receiving a fine as punishment

North Wales also had the third highest number of drug-related driving offences per 1,000 people in 2019.

The region saw a year on year increase in drug drivers, from 396 offences in 2018 to 436 in 2019

Male drivers were responsible for almost 9 in 10 drug-related driving offences, accounting for 87 per cent of all drug-related driving offences in 2019

A total 98 per cent of these offences resulted in the offender being found guilty, with 76 per cent of these resulting in a fine.

Gerry Bucke, general manager at Adrian Flux, said: "As a very dangerous and serious offence, it is surprising that North Wales had the highest number of drink drivers per 1,000 people in 2019.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal and you could find yourself with a criminal record as well as a hefty fine for drink driving. Always stay safe and sober when you drive.”
