WHITCHURCH Town Council will look at reopening town centre toilets this month in line with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Currently the toilets in White Lion Meadow, near Tesco are locked as well as other council-owned buildings, including the Civic Centre.

At the most recent full council meeting, held virtually on Thursday, June 18, discussions took place on how best to proceed.

Clerk of the council, Nicola Young confirmed that play areas will remain closed though.

She said: “The government are recommending that play areas stay closed and we confirm this decision locally.

“My recommendation is that we reopen White Lion Meadow toilets only.”

Ways to open the Civic Centre to various groups were also discussed, following on from the resuming of the Friday market.

“The staff have talked about having an entrance,” added Nicola. “Visitors will only be allowed to go to the community desk to ask for information and toilets will be locked.

“Staff have been asked to go to work for two weeks before reopening to public.”

One of the ways the council foresee reopening the Civic Centre is by having the upstairs rooms remain closed to the public.

Nicola added: “The thought behind only downstairs rooms is so no-one is touching banister. By using main hall people will have two-metre social distancing.”
