A GROUP of Loppington residents will soon launch a project to document their memories of growing up in the village.

The project will explore the 1950s and 60s in the village, but one piece of the puzzle remains.

During that period Loppington had a football team who played in the Whitchurch League, not to be confused with the current Loppington FC.

Resident Barry Hawkins, 74, is now appealing for information on the 'Bullringers' of his youth.

"I am a senior resident of the Loppington area having lived in the locality all my life," said Barry.

"There is project for people to write about their memories of growing up in this area from the 1940s to the 1980s.

"We are intending to gather enough interesting information to produce a booklet titled something on the lines of 'My Memories of Growing up in Loppington'.

"One aspect that is strong on my memory is that in the late fifties and early sixties, Loppington had a football team that played in the Whitchurch League.

"I can recall many of the players – the kit was red and black – and the team were known as The Bullringers after the historical bullring that still exists today in the centre of the road by the Dickin Arms pub.

"They played on Loppington Park against many other village teams that were larger than Loppington.

"I can remember games home and away against clubs from Malpas, Audlem, Hodnet, and Dudleston Heath for example, and also Sarn Rovers, Shocklach, Newton United etc.

"There was a period when the village was without a team until revived at a later date mainly due to the interest of people like John Jenkins who also grew up in the village."
