A MALPAS man who returned rubbish to a person who dumped it beside a car park in the village hopes people will think twice before fly-tipping in the future.

Simon Gordon saw rubbish had been left near his place of work on Friday after coming across a video on social media, and decided it would be a good idea to return the rubbish to the person who left it there.

After finding out where the home of the responsible person was, Simon produced a series of light-hearted videos on Snapchat as he went on a journey to take the rubbish to the person’s house.

He shared his videos on Facebook afterwards, and they have since been shared more than 1,100 times and have been watched more than 70,000 times.

While making light of the situation, Simon hopes his videos will discourage others from fly-tipping in the future.

He said: “We haven’t really had problems with fly-tipping in the past, but there has been an increase of rubbish being dumped in lanes and car parks, and for a nice quiet village, it’s a shame.

“For such a nice area to be tainted with bags of rubbish, it’s just wrong isn’t it?

“I was on my break at work and saw another resident of Malpas had posted pictures of someone dumping their rubbish in a hedge.

“There were two bags that got chucked in there – so I saw it and thought I’d go down to the car park and see if it was still there, and it was.

“The person who had left it was recognised as being someone local, so when we found out who it was, I decided I was going to take it to their house.”

The bags of rubbish contained general waste and an old mattress.

Simon added: “When I went to pick it up, residents nearby said they had seen the person doing it several times in as many weeks.

“Obviously it’s bang out of order, and it wasn’t like it was a great deal of waste either – it could’ve gone in the black bin.

“My partner and I were informed of where the person responsible for the rubbish lived, and I just thought I’d take it back to them.

“I just wanted to do it a bit light-heartedly, I didn’t want to cause any confrontation or anything, so I just put it on her driveway.”

The videos filmed by Simon have been circulating on social media over the course of the weekend, and have been shared on pages in the West Midlands and even as far away as Scotland.

“The response has been quite overwhelming,” he said. “I have had a lot of people messaging me and commenting on the post and sharing it, I wasn’t expecting it.

“I’m hoping it can act as a deterrent and maybe make people think twice before dumping their rubbish.

“I spend a lot of time in the week sorting out recycling and checking what can and can’t be recycled, so for people to not do the same is frustrating.

“It’s a nice village, and we have a two-year-old boy who we take around the village for walks, obviously we want to teach him right from wrong, so for older people to not understand is frustrating.”
