A DEESIDE-BASED business has welcomed a new addition to the family in a bid to help save a local attraction.

Iceland Foods has joined hundreds across Wales and adopted an animal at Chester Zoo.

The zoo made the shock announcement this week that it faced an uncertain future as it was not allowed to reopen - unlike some other attractions and business in England.

Bosses launched the Save Our Zoo campaign on Wednesday and revealed the attraction was “at risk of extinction” and could end the year £24 million in debt as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

A petition was launched and thousands of people made donations in a bid to save the zoo from indefinite closure.

Iceland Foods, based in Deeside, adopted the zoo's penguins on behalf of colleagues to help raise awareness of the need of the attraction.

A spokesman said on social media: "Chester Zoo is facing the devastating possibility of having to close its doors for good due to Covid-19.

"Not only is the zoo important for our local economy, its conservation work is recognised all across the world.

"We’ve adopted the zoo’s penguins on behalf of our colleagues, to help raise awareness of the need to keep the zoo’s doors open to the public, and you can do too.

"Please welcome our newest addition to the Iceland family, including five new born chicks named after NHS hospitals – Florence, Thomas, Bevan, Arrowe and Countess.
