With plenty of people finding ways to celebrate and commemorate VE Day in their own lockdown style last week, two brothers made sure they delivered a good day to people in Ellesmere in their very best way.

Adam Darlington is the social media manager for his brother Simon's Oswestry Classic Cars business and the pair came together to help people enjoy a good day.

Out came Simon's classic 1927 Rolls Royce and the pair headed off to The Red Lion, in Church Street, to pick up the hampers to donate to those nominated.

Adam says the idea was concocted between the pair.

“It was just an idea between myself and my brother Simon, who owns Oswestry Classic Cars,” said Adam.

“We knew that people were planning to have picnics on their drives or outside for VE Day, so we thought that it would be nice for people to have something delivered.

“The three hampers were made by the Red Lion in Ellesmere. They asked for people to be nominated and there were more than 100 entries, and we dropped them off.

“We picked them up and then away we went in the car."

Adam added that their main focus on using the classic car to make someone's day with the hampers was to provide a different story that might lift peoples' spirits around the COVID-19 crisis.

And he says he felt they achieved that with plenty of smiles on faces of people as they passed by.

He added: "The 1927 Rolls Royce, which was driven by Simon on the day, is probably the pick of the bunch for Simon and his business – there is a bit of a story to it.

"We think it originated from a Harley Street doctor and it’s possible that the owner may have been a doctor to the Queen.

"One of the reasons why we did this was to put a smile on people’s faces and take the issue of COVID-19 away.

"The news is just being dominated by that at the moment but we were hoping that when we turned up, we put a smile on their faces, and when we arrived we got a great reception."
